World Darts Championship Day 13: Brilliant Barney, Joy for Jackpot

This evening the third and fourth quarter finals took place at Alexandra Palace with some mouth-watering clashes in prospect with Michael Smith, Raymond van Barneveld, Peter Wright and Adrian Lewis all in action.

 Smith won the Bull backstage, and he threw first in the start of the match. And kicked off the match with a maximum, and took the first leg in 15 darts on d5. Barneveld levelled the set on tops after Smith missed a dart at d10. Barneveld then went on to break Smith’s throw with a superb 121 finish. Smith levelled the set in superb fashion with a ‘cheeky’ 97 finish (s19,d19,d20) to take the set to a deciding leg. Smith missed a dart at tops for the set, which gave Barney a chance at 170, Van Barneveld missed Bull and Smith took out tops to take the set.

Smith broke the Van Barneveld throw in the first leg of the second set with a 114 finish after the dutchman failed to take out 101. Smith missed a dart at tops for a two leg advantage, but Van Barneveld missed three darts at 32 and Smith took out tops for a 2-0 advantage. Van Barneveld continued to struggle on doubles as he missed three darts at 32, Smith missed a dart at tops for a 110 finish, but Van Barneveld took out double 16 to reduce the deficit to 2-1. However Smith took the set 3-1 with a magnificent 108 finish. Smith took the first leg of the third set with a 14 darter on d10. Smith broke the Van Barneveld throw to double his advantage in the set with a 12 darter on d6. Smith took the third set 3-0 with an amazing 121 finish on the Bull, to set up a 3-0 advantage in the match, Smith playing beautifully scoring phenomenally and lethal on his finishing.

RvB took the first leg in the fourth set winning his first leg in eight legs. Van Barneveld doubled his advantage in the fourth set with a 121 finish of his own on d14. Van Barneveld won his third leg on the bounce with a 25 finish on d8 to take the fourth set 3-0.

The pair hit three 180s on the bounce between them, with Smith hitting two back to back, the leg ended with double trouble from the pair and Van Barneveld took out tops to break Smith’s throw. Van Barneveld won his fifth leg on the bounce with a 76 finish to open up a two leg lead in the fifth set. Smith pegged it back to 2-1 courtesy of tops, but Van Barneveld has the darts for the set. The pair exchanged 180s in the fourth leg as RvB took out a sensational 121 finish on d14 to take the set and pull it back to 3-2, which queued a emphatic celebration right infront of Smith.

The sixth set started with both players kicking off with a 140, but it was Van Barneveld who took out yet another ton plus finish this time it was 104 as the dutchman continued his fightback. Van Barneveld continued hos fantastic ton plus finishing with another amazing 121 finish, amazingly his fourth 121 finish of the match. Van Barneveld took out 25 to win the sixth set 3-0 and more importantly to level the match up at 3-0.

Smith opened up the seventh set with an 11 dart leg on tops. Smith missed two darts at a double to lead 2-0, but Barney punished him taking out tops to level the seventh set. Van Barneveld broke the Smith throw taking out 64, the dutchman had the darts for the set and a 4-3 advantage, and thats exactly what the dutchman did taking out d4 to win four sets on the bounce turning the match on its head.

Smith took the first leg of the eighth set, looking to start a fightback in the match after losing the last four sets. Smith doubled his advantage in the set taking out 70 on tops. RvB kicked off the third leg with six perfect darts but failed to hit a treble with his third visit, however the dutchman made it a 12 darter on d18 to pull it back to   2-1 in the set. Smith set it up perfectly to take it to four legs each with a 174 to set up tops and he took out d10 on his next visit to take the match to a deciding set and Smith had the darts.

Smith held his throw and took the first leg of the decider looking to find the form that won him the first three sets of this match. Smith doubled his lead with a superb 130 finish to double his lead in the decider and had the darts for the match. Smith hit a 180 very timely after it looked like Barney was going to break him and Smith missed one dart at tops for the match but Barney took full advantage and hit d8 to break the Smith throw and pull the score back to 2-1 and should Barney hold throw we will be going to a tie breaker. Barney took out 32 on d8 to take the match to a tie breaker (the winner must win by two clear legs if the score goes to 5-5 there will be a sudden death leg).

Van Barneveld broke the Smith throw and opened up a 3-2 leg lead and had the darts from the match, a sensational turn around when he was two legs down in the deciding set. Van Barneveld missed one dart at d16 for the match, however Smith failed to convert 122 and Van Barneveld took out d16 to complete a monumental comeback from three sets down to win 5-4 and set up a semi final clash tomorrow with Peter Wright/Adrian Lewis.

Peter Wright vs Adrian Lewis

This match is set to be an epic contest, both players impressed with ton plus averages in previous rounds leading up to this match, it has all the making of going the distance.


Lewis won the Bull backstage, and had the darts at the start of the match which could prove crucial if the match goes all nine legs. Both players starting the match with a 140, Lewis taking the lead after missed doubles from the pair. Lewis doubled his advantage after Wright missed two darts at a double on 56 and Lewis punished him taking out tops. Wright broke Lewis straight back with a ‘lovely’ 121 finish on the bull. Lewis took out d5 for a 90 finish to take the opening set 3-1. 

Lewis took out 28 to take the first leg of the second set breaks Wright’s throw. Lewis took out a 96 finish to move two legs clear in the set. Lewis wired the bull for a 161 finish for the set, but in stepped Wright to take out tops to make it 2-1 in the set. Lewis took out an 81 finish on the bull for the set, after Wright missed a dart at the bull, Lewis moved into a two set lead.

Lewis took 278 out in six darts      (180, 98 finish) to move 1-0 ahead in the third set. Lewis broken Wright’s throw to double his advantage with a 36 finish on d9. Lewis took out 70 to win the third set without dropping a leg.

Lewis missed d13 for a 146 finish to take the opening leg of the fourth set, however Wright stopped the rot, taking out d1 to lead 1-0. 

Lewis hit back to back 180s in leg two, Wright responded with a 180 of his own but Lewis won the leg in 14 darts courtesy of d10. Lewis missed two darts at a double to break Wright’s throw and Wright took full advantage and took out d10 to move 2-1 ahead. Lewis held his throw with a 70 finish and took the set to a deciding leg. 

Wright kicked off the deciding leg with five perfect darts and looking the favourite for the set. Wright took the set taking out 58 and pulling the score back to 3-1.

Wright kicked off the fifth set with a maximum, and he took the opening leg with an 87 finish to break the Lewis throw while he was sat on 135. Wright continued his heavy scoring, kicking off the next leg with five perfect darts, it was a 13 dart leg for Wright ad he doubled his advantage in the set. Lewis pegged the scoreline back to 2-1 with a 13 darter on d10.

Lewis missed a superb effort at 131 (t17,d20,d20) however Wright failed to capitalise and Lewis broke Wright’s throw and had the darts for the set.

Wright missed a dart at tops for a 115 finish for the set, and Lewis took out d18 for the set and to open up a 4-1 lead in the match, just one set away from setting up a semi final clash with Raymond van Barneveld.

Wright started off the sixth set with a twelve darter courtesy of tops. Lewis responded perfectly with an 11 darter to level up the set. Wright held throw with a 74 finish on tops to move 2-1 ahead in the set. Lewis missed a dart at d16 to level the set, and Wright took out 76 to take the set 3-1.

Lewis kicked off the second set with five perfect darts, taking out tops to move 1-0 ahead in the set. Wright levelled the set taking out tops with Lewis sat on 128, Both players averaging around 103 at this point.

Wright broke the Lewis throw at a crucial time on 81 to move 2-1 ahead in the set. Lewis kicked off the fourth leg with five perfect darts and looked certain to break straight back. Wright missed bull for a 164 for the set and a twelve darter but Lewis took out 47 for an eleven darter to have the darts for the match. Lewis missed three match darts, and Wright then missed one dart at tops for a 120 finish, Lewis returned to the oche and took out 40 on d5 with his last dart in hand and he sets up a clash with Raymond van Barneveld tomorrow evening.
