German Darts Masters Day Two- Evening Session
WILSON STUNS SULJOVIC AS SNAKEBITE BEATS BUNTING
James Wilson produced a superb performance to come back from 4-1 down to beat Mensur Suljovic whilst Peter Wright edged out Stephen Bunting 6-4 in an entertaining encounter.
World Champion Gary Anderson was also through- confidently beating Daryl Gurney, whilst Michael van Gerwen hit 132 and 138 checkouts in getting the better of home-crowd favourite Rene Eidams.
Adrian Lewis withstood a John Bowles comeback to progress to the last 16 of the German Darts Masters in Munich. ‘Jackpot’ was quick out of the gates- establishing a 5-1 advantage in a flash. However, ‘the Bulldog’ fought back, winning three legs on the spin to reduce the deficit to 5-4. Lewis though, kept his composure to seal the victory in the tenth leg- to progress and play James Richardson tomorrow.
The second match of the evening saw ‘the Cobra’ Jelle Klaasen produce a scintillating performance as he whitewashed Ronny Huybrechts. The Dutchman averaged 104.86 in the 6-0 win, meaning that he will play Ian White tomorrow.
Michael Smith was the next man through as he edged past Jeffrey de Graaf in a last leg decider. The Dutchman’s composure seemed to be in check throughout the match, as he took Smith all the way, coolly holding his throw with smart checkout even when ‘Bully Boy’ threatened a comeback from 3-1 down. De Graff did buckle in the last leg though, as Smith’s European Tour experience payed dividence.
The following match saw ‘Snakebite’ Peter Wright win through a tight tussle against Stephen Bunting. The former Lakeside World Champion was left to rue early break opportunities when he was originally outscoring Wright. The third leg saw Bunting miss five darts to break and the fifth saw a further two. Wright’s scoring then improved as he found the 180’s, before he completes victory in the tenth leg with a nerveless 121 checkout on the bullseye for a 6-4 win. Wright faces Cristo Reyes next round.
James Wilson was the next man through as he recovered from deficits of 3-0 and 4-1 to beat Mensur Suljovic. The Austrian appeared to be in complete control early on, but five straight legs for the ‘Jammy Dodger’ saw him progress 6-4 in Munich. He’ll play one of this evening’s earlier victors, Michael Smith in the last 16.
Gary Anderson then put in a fabulous performance as he averaged 106.59 in beating Daryl Gurney 6-1. The World Champion lost the first keg, before winning six on the bounce for an impressive win against the dangerous Gurney. William O’Connor is daunted with the task of stopping ‘the Flying Scotsman’.
The penultimate match of the night was somewhat of a procession aswell as Benito van de Pas beat Devon Petersen 6-2. ‘Big Ben’ pinned a wonderful 160 checkout during this classy performance that sees him play Joe Cullen next.
The final match saw Rene Eidams face up to Michael van Gerwen- whom ‘the Cube’ gave a run for his money at Alexandra Palace not too long ago. Eidams with the support of the crowd found two breaks of throw early on, however he couldn’t hold his throw meaning that it was 2-2 after four legs. Van Gerwen then found his form, and he accelerated into a 5-3 lead with a 138 checkout in the seventh leg. And despite Eidams best efforts to keep the match alive with a missed bullseye for a 164 checkout in leg nine, van Gerwen took out a magnificent 132 checkout with bull, bull, double 16 to claim a 6-3 win. Kevin Painter has been flowing some great darts of late so will be looking to cause an upset when he duels with the world number one.
