Dutch Darts Masters- Final session
Michael van Gerwen stormed his way to the Dutch Darts Masters title as be comprehensively beat Dave Chisnall, Mervyn King and Daryl Gurney in a convincing run for the first European Tour glory of 2016.
Van Gerwen was the first quarter-final winner of the evening as he beat Dave Chisnall 6-3 in a high quality encounter. Both players hit four maximums apiece whilst their averages were both over a ton- ‘Chizzy’ with 103.72 and van Gerwen with 103.45. ‘The Green Machine’ hit a 128 checkout on his way to victory against Chisnall.
The next match proved to be the closest match of the evening as Mervyn King and Benito van de Pas played right through to a deciding leg- of which ‘the King’ snatched victory. Mervyn stroked in three 180’s in the win, which was a terrific feat given Benito’s form this weekend. ‘Big Ben’ did pick out a wonderful 132 finish, but he will be frustrated not to have closed out this match.
Mensur Suljovic then threw a magnificent 102.1 average in completing a 6-3 win versus Simon Whitlock to be the third man to make it to the semi- finals. ‘The Wizard’ hit four 180’ s in the defeat, but nevertheless, it was a confidence boosting weekend for the Aussie- showing a resurgence in form to beat the likes of Ian White and Jelle Klaasen.
The final semi- final saw Daryl Gurney knock out Adrian Lewis in an astonishing performance that included nine 180’s from the Northern Irishman. Gurney averaged 106.84 in beating ‘Jackpot’ 6-4 in undoubtedly the performance of the round. Lewis’ brace of maximums meant that there was an incredible 11 match 180’s in just 10 legs of darts in an extremely entertaining game for those attending in Venray.
The semi- final matches were dominated by Michael van Gerwen and Daryl Gurney as they made light work of Mervyn King and Mensur Suljovic- who ran out of steam somewhat at this stage.
Van Gerwen hit a majestic 170 maximum checkout in his 6-2 victory against King, as the world number one kept up his relentless form by averaging 96.59. Mervyn only averaged 88.96 here but it was a great weekend for him as he found some good form- notably beating World Champion Gary Anderson.
Daryl Gurney then set up a final against van Gerwen when he completed a win against Mensur Suljovic in just seven legs. An average of 93.46 was enough to get by with a 6-1 victory versus a below par Suljovic, whom averaged a mere 83.51 in this semi- final.
Michael van Gerwen wasn’t going to let anyone get in his way as he completed a breath-taking European Tour victory on home soil. Daryl Gurney has undoubtedly had a fantastic tournament but this was one step too far as van Gerwen stormed his way to the Dutch Darts Masters title. An average of 112.26, six 180’s and a 152 checkout shows just how much of an authoritative display this was from the world number one as he shut the door on ‘the Dude’, winning 6-2.
