Today I have ‘The Silencer’ Jeff Smith joining me for an interview The Canadian darts star from New Brunswick had took the BDO by storm after 3 years in the PDC Jeff reached the semi finals of the 2015 Lakeside World Championships losing out to eventual winner Scott Mitchell that great run seen Jeff Qualify for the BDO World Darts Trophy at Event City in Manchester Jeff also reached the Semi Finals there too and he will be participating at the Winmau World Masters in Hull in October.
TS:Thanks for joining me for this interview Jeff, first I must ask how are your darts going at the moment in Canada?
JS: ” Hi Tom.. Darts have been going pretty well considering the amount of time I’ve been putting into my new business. Have the Canadian National Championships next month along with the defense of my Canadian Open title. Still finding time to practice”
TS: Do you have to travel a lot to get to local tournaments in Canada etc?
JS: ” We are used to a 4-8 hour commute to play our events.. As you know North America is a pretty big place”
TS: you have had a fantastic year so far this year after reaching 2 major semi finals what are your targets for the rest of 2015?
JS:”Knowing I’m back at Lakeside, I’m really looking forward to making another good run. But still have my eye set on the Winmau World Masters stage play as well”
TS: You did play webcam darts is that good for practise?
JS: “Since I’ve moved to my current location, I have yet to get set back up.. But it is 1000 x’s better than I expected when I first logged on.. There are available matches in just about every timezone possible. And the Standard is as high as you want it to be.. (I even had the first WDA 9 darter on there)You will find pros on there from both organizations”
TS: how many 9 darters have you hit in in practise or in matches?
JS: “I’ve hit 5 total, unfortunately none televised.. Yet”
TS: who has had the biggest influence on your darts career?
JS: “That’s a really tough question, as many people have influenced my game in different ways. My grandfather brought me into the game in the youth program. But Steve Foster really was the guy who took me to the next level. From there it was just experience on”
TS: Are there any other Canadian Darts players to look out for?
JS: “Yes definitely, I’ve been mentoring Alberta’s Dawson Murschell. He’s beginning to learn how to play and now win with confidence. You will see him on the stage soon enough”
TS: Who is the toughest opponent you have ever faced ?
JS: “Has to be Dave Chisnall, I played him on one of the PDC Players Championships. I was well over 100 average and got stuffed 6-1. Just an awesome display”
TS: Would you ever go back to the PDC ?
JS: “I wouldn’t say never. But the BDO has worked out really well for me. The PDC just doesn’t really exist in North America, but there are dozens of BDO Events here. Maybe it would be different if I lived in the UK, but for now I’m definitely happy with my choice of where I’m at”
TS: Thanks you Jeff for your time to take this Interview I wish you the best of luck in the future
JS: “Thanks for the opportunity Tom.. Really enjoy your articles, and more than happy to be included in one of them”
