Today we are joined by ‘Kong‘ Robbie Green ahead of the BetVictor World Matchplay Robbie Green continues to impress in the PDC as he qualified for the BetVictor World Matchplay in two weeks at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, Green had to reach at least the last 8 at PC11 in Barnsley to overtake Rowby-John Rodriguez in the last spot for the matchplay.
Green reached the quarter finals losing out narrowly to Kim Huybrechts 6-5 after missing match darts, the only way he could of not got into the matchplay was if Cristo Reyes reached the final, Reyes lost out in the semi final to Joe Cullen, the highlight of his day though was without doubt his last 32 clash with Jermaine Wattimena, the dutchman was 5-0 up on Green, but then the liverpudlian won 6 legs on the spin to earn a 6-5 victory.
Green has had a phenomenal year compared to his first year in the PDC, though it must be said he had his injury concerns last year and after several operations he seems to be finding his form, Green Had 3 injections, accupunture physio and 7 weeks without throwing a dart which included his wife Ruth having to hide his darts so he wasnt tempted to play,he had torn the tendon and rest was the best cure.
This year was far better for Green after reaching his first PDC semi finals in Players Championship events 3 and 5 in Barnsley, picking up over £13,000 on the pro tour alone.
Green also on the friday qualified for the next 2 European Tour events The International Darts Open and the European Darts Trophy.
This will be Green’s first visit to the World Matchplay for 12 years he will be looking to carry on his form from the last six months capable of beating anyone on his day.
Thanks for joining us Robbie, first of all congratulations on qualifying for the World Matchplay, it was a gruelling last day but you got the job done, how did it feel when u knew you had made it ?
” Relief,Ruth (my wife) had told me id needed 2 more games before the hudson match to get in,so when i lost against kim i thought id blown it,but she then told me i needed results to go my way, which they did.i ended up leaving the room and standing in the bar”
On route to qualifying you were 5-0 down to Jermaine Wattimena, you must of a had a few things in your head, what gave you the confidence and determination to come back and win 6-5 in a game you needed to win ?
” I think at 5-0 down you think your out and you relax and start to play like you can,i hit 4 back to back 100+ finishes and then got it to 5-5 i thought 1 good leg and you can pinch this, think jermaine started with a 45 and i jumped on it and got away with it”
You face Phil Taylor next Monday in the World Matchplay, what will you do to get yourself prepared for the game ?
” Church twice a day to pray haha.i’ll do a few hours a day on the board, but not over think about the game,im quite relaxed about it,at worst i lose a dart match at best beat the best ever, its one or the other,no pressure as everyone expects me to get snotted anyway,so hopefully i play like i can and produce a massive shock,do i believe i can beat him yes…do i think i will beat him? Prob not but will try my plums off”
It has been 12 years since you made your Winter Gardens debut, do you feel you have learned a lot about the game since then ?
” Yes im a much different player now from then, back then looking back i was a decent player with no experiance, but i have that part of my game now after playing at lakeside and a couple of major finals”
You recently signed a deal with Winmau, will we be seeing some new ‘Kong’ darts ?
” If i get them in time there is a chance, the guys at winmau are trying to get a couple of sets ready for me but im not sure if i will have them in time, they will also have a coating ive never tried before so i,ll only use them if they feel ok,im trying some new points out and they feel fantastic so we will see what happens with the darts”
You have had a fantastic year, compared to last year we know you have had a tough start due to several operations how tough was that for you ?
” It was a horrible painful waste of a years card really,i was rubbish, low in confidence, sore, and grumpy,it was what it was and its been sorted out, took 8 months but we got there in the end”
You have been winning a lot of local competitions recently, surely that must give you a great deal of confidence ?
” Yeah won 6 in a month, gives you a little boost but its what you do in pdc events that you can build confidence on,no disrespect to anyone but every round in these events tests you”
It is well documented that you are a big Liverpool FC fan, do you ever get support from people connected to the club ?
” No not really, get good support from fans at the stadium on match days, always get asked for pics which is nice and in the pub before have a natter about darts and football with them”
How did it feel to return to the PDC after a 7 year absence ? And how much has the PDC grown since you switched to the BDO ?
” Standard has gone through the roof, events are much better,i remember playing uk opens in pubs around manchester & london, its came on leaps & bounds since those days, for the better i might add”
Do you have a regular practise partner or do you like to practise alone ?
” Yes i practice with mark rice (he played Ronny Huybrechts in the uk open on the main stage this year) very good lefty, also practice with andy howarth who plays the Challenge Tour, very good player who is starting to get some good results”
Your son Jamie is a very keen darter as we all know, how is his career coming along ?
” He is a dad now so he put darts on the back burner for a bit but has started playing county for merseyside again”
Will the ‘Kong’ army be out in full force in Blackpool ?
” Its been a nightmare with the ticket situation,we only get 3 passes,my mate rang the other day an asked for 20 tickets,i almost dropped my phone laughing.im sure a few will get in”
Thanks for your time Robbie and we wish you all the best in Blackpool.
” Thanks for the support and messages ive recieved,i will give 110% you can count on that”
