Today I will be having a chat with PDC young star Declan Salter who is tipped by many top PDC players to make it to the top at just 15 years old he has already achieved so much He started playing in the Lowestoft local league, the festival league at 13yrs old. After 3 games winning them all he got asked to go practice with Suffolk youth. At the practice day he hit 5 180s,9 140s,and a 164 checkout. Since then he has lost only 4 games. He has entered many comps including Essex open, got to semis of youth,Felixstowe open got to quarters. Beginning of this year he was approached by Chris clegg from protégé events about sponsoring Declan. He is now doing pdc development tour. He has also been asked to play super league next season. He has practiced with peter Wright and mervyn king. He is also sponsored by red dragon who supply him with equipment.
This is part 3 of my feature on the future of darts and what potential these youngsters have
TS: Thanks for joining me Declan at such a young age playing competitive darts do you feel a lot of nerves before playing older players ?
DS: “I did when I first started playing, but as I’ve gained experience I don’t feel nerves anymore”
TS: What are your targets for 2015?
DS: “To get some money on the order of merit of youth tour, and to become more consistent in comps that I enter”
TS:are there any other young players to look out for?
DS: “Lewis cracknall who is a Suffolk team mate and now part of protégé events team.he is 15yrs old and has a big future”
TS: your still at school,do you find a lot of time to practise?
DS: “Well I’m doing my GCSEs at the moment,so have a lot of spare time. I try and practice at least 2hrs a day,as well as playing 3times a week plus I have a board in my room which makes it easier”
TS: Who has been your biggest inspiration so far?
DS: “My stepdad has been a massive help as he has helped with sponsorship and practices with me,and gives me a kick up the bum when I’ve got abit lazy. My grandad has drove me all over the country for comps, early mornings late nights”
TS: What Darts player do you look up to?
DS: “Peter Wright. He has bought the fun into darts,he enjoys what he is doing which reflects on how I feel about darts”
TS: You have practised with Mervyn King and Peter Wright have they given you any advice, support etc
DS: “Mervyn king was a while ago,but peter Wright told me to enjoy darts, practice hard and your game will come. He also tried to get me to wear bright coloured clothes but they don’t suit me”
TS: you must have a lot of confidence playing so well at such a young age are there any limits to what you want to achieve?
DS: “I think every young darts player wants to be world champ, including me,but at this moment in time,I’m just going to keep practising hard and hopefully one day achieve my dream”
TS: where would you like to be in 10 years time?
DS: “Hopefully have my pro card, and be in top 64 in the world”
TS: Protégé Events are sponsoring you how supportive have they been?
DS: “They have been great. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be on youth tour. Plus they run comps for all the players”
TS: thanks for your time Declan I wish you all the best in the future.
DS: “Thanks a lot. Thanks for giving me the time”
That’s all till next time at Tungsten Stories……
